Welcome to the BOOK OF ACTS (BE THE CHURCH).  Each week we’re providing a series of questions for your personal devotional time or for your small group experience.You are always welcome to follow your own devotional format, but feel free to use this one to dig a bit deeper in th4e Book of Acts.

BE THE CHURCH Acts 15:1-6 Week One (Days 1-4)
Week One – Day 1

Praise (What is it about God’s character that I am grateful for?)

Read the text: 1 Corinthians 2:13-15 (introduction) (Jot down words that you want to reflect on)

  • As you see it, describe the difference between earthly and heavenly wisdom.
  • Which have you found yourself relying on more?
  • What evidence do you have that you are confident that the Holy Spirit is at work in you?
  • In what ways is Galatians 5:22-23 a proof text for the Spirit being alive in your life?
  • When have you made a godly decision that others frowned upon?
  • What has been some results of weighing in on the wisdom of the Holy Spirit in conjunction with other sources of healthy wisdom?
  • How do you intend to live in accordance with this passage?

Week One – Day 2

Praise (What are you thankful for from Day 1 with the Lord?)

Read the text: Acts 15:1-6 (Jot down words that you want to reflect on)

  • What is your initial reaction when reading verse 1?
  • How would you discern whether or not circumcision, in this case, was or is the right thing to do as it pertains to salvation?
  • What do you know from Scripture that supports Paul and Barnabas’ dispute with the Jewish traditionalists? (v. 2)
  • How do you discern whether or not to agree with Paul and Barnabas’ experiences of Gentiles coming to Christ?
  • Again, circumcision and particularly the Law of Moses (10 Commandments for example) are not sinful. So how do you see discernment coming into play here as it pertains to your salvation? (v. 5)
  • How do you intend to live in accordance with this passage?

Week One – Day 3

  • Read to draw conclusions about coming to faith in Christ from Cornelius’ conversion story in Acts 10.
  • How would you discern whether or not someone is truly saved?
  • Discuss Ephesians 2:8-9 and 10:9-10 as it pertains to salvation in Christ.
  • Discuss James 2:14-26 regarding works and salvation.
  • How do you intend to live in accordance with this passage?

  • Come to an understanding of God’s plan for the Gentiles in the O.T. from the following references: Amos 9:11-15; Isaiah 2:2, 45:20-23; Jeremiah 12:15-16; Hosea 3:4-5; Zechariah 2:11, 8:22.
  • Then compare what you understand to the N.T. from Romans 15:8-13.
  • How would you feel if one, if not all of the leaders of the Church supported your evangelistic mission as James did in these verses?
  • In what way(s) do the following references to unity in the Church: Titus 3:9-11; Galatians 3:28-29; Ephesians 2:11-22.
  • How do you intend to live in accordance with this passage?

Read the text: Acts 1:3 (The Cross…after His sufferings) (Jot down words that you want to reflect on)

  • Examine the following non-exhaustive references to be reminded of a deeper purpose of the Cross: Romans 6:23, 5:9, 10; Colossians 1:14, 2:14-15; Isaiah 53:5; 2 Timothy 1:10; Hebrews 10:19-20.
  • Come to an understanding of Jesus’ death for you by taking a closer look at Isaiah 53:4-6; 2 Corinthians 5:21.
  • What does Galatians 2:20 mean to you personally?
  • What does 1 Peter 2:24-25 mean to you personally?
  • How do you intend to live in accordance with this passage?

  • Examine the following non-exhaustive references to be reminded of proof of the Resurrection: 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Acts 2:29, 13:36; Matthew 28: 1-10; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24: 1-3; John 20:1-10.
  • Come to an understanding of the power of the resurrection by taking a closer look at John 8:36; Philippians 3:10; Romans 8:11; Revelation 1:18
  • What do you think your reaction would be if Jesus appeared to you in person?
  • How do you intend to live knowing that He is alive and will appear to you in person one day?

  • What does Matthew 6:10 mean to you personally?
  • Draw out application to Matthew 6:33.
  • Agree/Disagree. Why? The Kingdom is where Jesus is.
  • How do you intend to live with the understanding that the Christ’s Kingdom is already and not yet at the same time?

Read the text: Acts 1:4-5 (Baptism of the Holy Spirit) (Jot down words that you want to reflect on)

  • Why do you suppose Jesus called the baptism of the Holy Spirit a gift?
  • What have you always thought the Baptism of the Holy Spirit refers to?
  • A definition of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit: At the moment of salvation, the Holy Spirit places a believer into permanent union with Christ and with other believers in the Body of Christ. Agree/Disagree. Why?
  • Examine 1 Corinthians 12:13 and Romans 6:1-4 as it pertains baptism of the Holy Spirit.
  • Knowing that, as a follower of Jesus, you’ve been washed by His blood and bathed by His Spirit, how do you intend to live out the remainder of your days? (Consider Ephesians 4:5; Romans 6:1-10; Colossians 2:12)

  • What do the following references, out of Proverbs, tell you about being an influential follower of Jesus? (Proverbs 27: 9, 17; 10:17; 13:20; 15:1; 12:26; 29:12)    
  • Read Matthew 5:13-15. Describe how salt and light are agents of influence.
  • Transfer the influence of salt and light to being your purpose.
  • In what ways can you be a witness in your everyday life? (Think about your attitude, actions, intentionality and opportunities)

  • What does it mean to you to be filled by the Spirit?
  • Read Ephesians 5:18-21. These verses teach us that all followers of Jesus are to be filled and it’s a continuous action. What are your thoughts about that?
  • What do you think is taking place when your relationship with God as He is filling you?
  • In what way(s) does sin impact being filled by the Spirit?
  • What sort of habit do you desire to form to remain filled with His Spirit?
